OWY began in early 2009 when a friend recommended Valerie Okunami to teach yoga for the tenants at a local Class A office building in downtown Sacramento. Over time, OWY organically grew as students were transferred to other offices or as other locations saw the benefits of starting a yoga program. OWY currently teaches yoga throughout the Sacramento Region and is always expanding locations to include large corporations and groups in general. We stand for positive, productive and healthy people. Our students are seeking better overall health and well-being. What they discover is that yoga gives them so much more.
All of our independent contractor instructors are certified, insured, and trained by experienced Yoga Alliance schools. We are careful to select compassionate and humble instructors who genuinely care about their yoga students and their yoga experience. They also have a strong personal yoga practice, work ethic and receive great satisfaction in helping others become healthier.
The Bizi Yogi 200 RYT Yoga Alliance Yoga Teacher Training program was created in 2014 for busy professionals. Students become teachers as they learn to inspire and transform others with the gift of yoga. Areas of specialty: Hot, Yin, Corporate, Power Fusiion, Senior Chair. Check out teacher training for more information.
Valerie Okunami - CEO & President
Okunami Workplace Yoga, Inc. and Bizi Yogi tm
Valerie Okunami has found that it is possible to use her experience as a thriving media entrepreneur to emerge successfully in an entirely different field, in this case operating workplace yoga programs and yoga teacher training programs.
Ms. Okunami began her media career in 1988 in Concord, Calif., as a sales executive for a local radio station. From there she moved to ever larger broadcast outlets until she joined the staff of NBC affiliate KCRA in Sacramento.
In 1992, she set forth on her own with her Okunami Media advertising agency. She has been flying under her own power ever since. The agency’s client list included Pac-Tel Cellular dealers from California and Nevada, The California Railroad Museum, Sacramento Ballet and a seemingly endless list of entities large and small.
In 2005, the agency expanded to include publishing a Sacramento edition of the national magazine Builder/Architect. Onto that, she added a Sacramento edition of the national medical publication, MD News. In a stroke of seeming clairvoyance, the first cover of Ms. Okunami’s MD News featured Bill Barcellona, vice president of governmental affairs for the California Association of Physician Groups (CAPG). That was in 2006. The next year she founded CAPG Health magazine, of which she remains the publisher. The bimonthly magazine’s national circulation is growing as managed care gains more attention with implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
All during her years of building her media operations, Ms. Okunami maintained a keen interest in health and physical fitness. As an undergraduate business major at Sacramento State, she worked as a fitness instructor and personal trainer. In 2000, yoga became a major part of her fitness regime and it grew in intensity until she found herself a cYoga Alliance 200 hour certified yoga instructor teaching the practice and now training yoga instructors. She is a Master Reiki practitioner and incorporates healing energy work into her classes and has created a private personal transformative yoga program using the power of yoga, reiki, mantra and mudra for healing. Valerie has trained from the best in the yoga world today and will continue to hone her teaching skills so she can continue to be an effective teacher to others.
In 2009 she founded Okunami Workplace Yoga, conducting yoga classes for employees at the workplace. Today, she operates 14 employer-sponsored classes a week in the Sacramento area called Bizi Yogi. Client firms include Hines Property Management, AKT Properties, CBRE Real Estate, Vintage Senior Living Sierra Point, Sysco Food Services, Allstate Insurance with employees from some of the top entities in the nation like Kaiser, Umpqua Bank, Drexel University, Social Security Administration, California State Parks, and many more! You can find Valerie at Pulse Power Yoga in Sacramento where the Bizi Yogi Training program is conducted.
